ASSESSMENT OF THE FATIGUE DAMAGE TO THE PROPELLER SHAFT OF A SEA CRAFT

We analyze the causes and character of in-service failures of the propeller shafts of sea crafts made of low-alloy steel. It is established that the main cause of failure is the corrosion fatigue of steel, although the mechanical characteristics of the metal in air are satisfactory and the long-term operation of the shaft can be guaranteed by the protection of its material against the action of seawater.
