New cokemaking process is cleaner, CTC says

A new cokemaking technology from Coal Technologies Corp. (CTC) is cost-competitive with existing coke ovens but at half the capital cost and without the pollution concerns of the older slot-oven technology, company executives say. The Bristol, Va., company is putting together financing for a 60,000-ton-per-year facility in Princeton, W. Va. The CTC/CLC (Char, Liquids and Coke) process evolved out of earlier efforts to develop a coal-gasification process that could produce an alternative to petroleum-based motor fuels. The dropoff in petroleum prices in the 1980s made that process uneconomical, but researchers believed they could make coke using a char produced in the gasification process, explains Robert Wright, v.p. of engineering at CTC.
