Barely eight months since breaking ground for a new sheet minimill in Delta, Ohio, North Star BHP Steel is providing pre-employment training for potential job applicants. In early December, a sign on the west gate of the plant site announces "311 days till first coil," and another nearby sign tallies "55,597 cubic yards of concrete laid to date." Heavy rains in October and November created hip-deep mud at the plant site, slowing the pace of construction. But managers remain committed to casting their first slabs 15 months after breaking ground, says Chuck Stanley, vice president for human resources at the mill. The schedule is to cast the first heat on July 11th and to begin rolling coils on Oct. 11th.
