OSHA proposes 1 million dollars fine for AK safety violations

The citation issued on April 1st lists five violations that OSHA labels "serious" and 14 "willful" violations of OSHA's lockout/tagout safety standards in the BOF and caster area of the plant, where the October accident occurred (Newsfront, New Steel, January). A willful violation is one made with "an intentional- disregard of, or plain indifference to," the regulations, OSHA says. Each willful violation carries a potential penalty of 70,000 dollars. Among the charges, OSHA investigators observed workers and supervisors performing duties without following appropriate safety procedures. In some cases, the supervisors instructed workers "to not use appropriate deenergizing and lockout procedures," the citation says.
