Compromise reached in National, USWA arbitration; LTV wins hearing

Arbitrator Theodore St. Antoine fashioned a compromise in his arbitration of National Steel's contract reopener with the United Steelworkers of America (USWA). Under the compromise, the 7,000 USWA members at National will receive: centre dot hourly wage increases totaling 1 dollars/ hour over three years: 50 cents/hour retroactive to Aug. 1, 1996, and 25 cents/hour on Aug. 1, 1997 and 1998; centre dot lump-sum bonuses of 500 dollars on May 1, 1998 and 1999; and centre dot one additional holiday that was added in 1993 and will continue for the final three years of the contract.
