Specialty-steel imports into the U.S. totaled a record 894,009 tons in 2000, a 7-percent increase from 834,412 tons the prior yean Twenty-seven percent of the U.S. specialty-steel market "was lost to these imports," says the Specialty Steel Industry of North America (SSINA).Imports of stainless steel, the largest specialty category, increased 7 percent to 692,726 tons. Stainless imports accounted for 27 percent of the market. Electrical-steel imports increased by 7 percent to 122,654 tons; tool-steel imports totaled 78,629 tons, up 6 percent.
