Many metals-producing and -working companies refurbish bearings regularly both to enhance their efficiency and to extend their life expectancy. The most common cause of damage to bearings is the ingress of foreign materials after the bearing seal begins to leak, explains Wally Davis, area coordinator, bearing repair, Timken Co. Moisture can get trapped in a bearing and cause water-etching or line-etching or begin to rust the bearing. Dirt or tiny pieces of steel can cause bruising, which appears as tiny dents over the surface of the bearing rolling elements.
