Vimentin and S100 Protein in Cells in Forming Spinal Nerve Sensory Ganglia

The aim of the present work was to study the expression of the intermediate filament proteins vimentin and S100 protein in cells in forming spinal nerve sensory ganglia (SNSG) in Wistar rats on days 12-19 of intrauterine development (n = 22) and neonatal rats (n = 6). Formation of SNSG gliocytes was studied using immunohistochemical methods. Vimentin-immunopositive precursors of neurons and glial cells were found to be present in SNSG rudiments in rat embryos on days 12-17 of development. At later time points (day 19 of intrauterine development and day 1 of postnatal development), vimentin was synthesized only in cells in the differentiating glia. Rat SNSG gliocytes started to produce S100 protein at these times. There was a tendency for S100 protein to accumulate in the larger neurons typical of mature SNSG on day 1 of postnatal development.
