Where is the evidence for split fovea processing in word recognition?

In a recent review published in this journal (Jordan & Paterson, 2009; J&P), we highlighted problems concerning the split fovea theory of word recognition (SFT). Two proponents of SFT have now responded (Ellis & Brysbaert, 2010; E&B) and here is our (1500-word) reply to that article. We have no vested interests in either disparaging SFT or favouring an alternative theory of retinal projection. However, we do have interests in determining the quality of the evidence and arguments on which SFT is founded.
