Last month, I covered the need to grow modern, genetically lean gilts more steadily to first service and mate them later and why. We saw that it costs dollars to delay first service by about a month, but we can get these dollars back, and more. There's a lot we can do in the interim, "dead-loss" period. The first is to spend more time quarantining all purchased replacements and then employing a proper, planned induction (acclimatization) protocol. I'll cover induction next month.
