Swine influenza, often referred to more simply as the "flu," is a highly contagious viral disease of swine. It is characterized by sudden onset of pneumonia in a large percentage of the herd. Pigs typically will cough and have difficulty breathing. Usually, they go off feed. High fevers, ranging from 104-106°, are also common. In the breeding herd, swine influenza can cause reproductive and farrowing problems, as well as the other symptoms associated with this disease.
