The monograph 'Fundamental Problems of Russian Metallurgy at the Threshold of the XXI Century' has just been published. This work was undertaken at the initiative of the Metallurgy Department in the Mining-Metallurgical Division of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences (RAEN) (the editorial board for the monograph - RAEN Academicians V.Zh.Arens, Yu.F.Shevakm, A.V.Elyutm, M.O MiI'vidskii, G.I.Eskin, P.I.Yugov, and others). The list of authors contributing to this unique publication includes leading Russian scientists in physical and process metallurgy. The main focus of the monograph and the characteristic that distinguishes it from previous similar publications is the breadth of the problems that are examined.Volume I of the monograph - The Metallurgy of Ferrous Metals (main editors - RAEN Academicians Yu. F Shevakin and P. I. Yugov), 453 pp. This volume includes 18 chapters devoted to the status and development prospects of the raw-materials and fuel-energy base of ferrous metallurgy, problems and trends in the growth of the production of iron-based metallic materials, aspects of the refining, casting, and deformation of steels, etc.
