A futuristic proposal to generate solar electricity from a road paved with glass panels that could collect and distribute the energy has been put forward by electrical engineer Scott Brusaw. Sunlight would shine through the surface onto a middle layer of solar cells, which would produce electric energy to light the road at night and heat it in winter, with enough electricity leftover to power homes and businesses. It is estimated that each mile of solar panels could power 500 homes.It is envisaged that the roadway's base layer would contain the nation's electric grid, replacing the current US power grid with a distributed network of independent power sources. The base layer could also carry fibre optic cables.
