Klamath River points to importance of fishery and the limits of government on several fronts

It's been a grueling year for commercial salmon trailers on the West Goast. Despite higher Chinook returns to the Sacramento River and relatively stable returns to other major rivers, the Klamath River runs rule much of the fishing opportunity for Oregon and California. And in 2006, the projected returns were dismal. Federal fishery managers opted to eliminate commercial salmon fishing altogether in northern California and southern Oregon and dramatically reduce it in central California and northernOregon.
