摘要

It is appropriate that Boston hosted the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea's 2006 symposium. After all, the Bay State has a cape named for its abundance of codfish, a species that for some 400 years has symbolized the region's fishing industry. If cod's abundance energized New England's early economies, its current scarcity symbolizes the tough times the region's groundfish industry is experiencing now. And so with an eye toward preserving a fishing future — here and throughout the world — an international field of marine scientists, gear technology experts and fishermen gathered in a large ballroom at the Seaport Hotel. The five-day symposium was dedicated to fishing technology in the 21st century and finding ways to integratefishing and ecosystem conservation.
