There's a lot to say for sponsoring and lengthening a boat. You get a boat that can pack more fish, cany more gear on deck and is safer to operate. If not a new boat, you certainly get a different boat than you had in one-third to one-half the time itwould take to build a boat from the keel up. And it costs less than a new boat. You can check off most of those advantages as the reason the Timmy Boy, a 30-year-old, 54-foot groundfish, shrimper, blackcod and Dungeness crab boat from Newport, Ore., was hauled out at Fashion Blacksmith in Crescent City, Calif., for sponsoning and lengthening.
