Paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardias: Atrioventricular nodal reentrant tachycardia and atrioventricular reentrant tachycardias

Atrioventricular nodal reentrant tachycardia (AVNRT) and atrioventricular reentrant tachycardia (AVRT) are the most common forms of paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia. Both occur in otherwise healthy young individuals, most of them without significant structural heart disease. Both AVNRT and AVRT are A-V nodal-dependent tachycardias, and in AVNRT the reentry circuit is confined within the so-called compact atrioventricular node. In most cases the reentry loop uses the anterograde slow pathway and retrograde fast pathway designated as typical or common form of AVNRT. About 20% to 30% of the variant forms of AVNRT are diagnosed during intracardiac electrophysiologic studies.
