The search for best practices is certainly a worthy and commendable task. It is clear that a tremendous effort was taken to create the Duchenne Dystrophy "best practices" report. It appears, however, that the planners and authors seem to be unaware of the historical context of "best practices". This highlights the need for cross-fertilization between disciplines. 1 was responsible for the roll-out of continuous quality improvement (CQI), team building, and creativity, in the early 1990s for Lockheed Missiles and Space Company. "Best Practices" is a component of the TQM (Total Quality Management) process. TQM was imported to the United States from Japan primarily through the work of Dr. W. Edwards Deming as shown in his work "Out of the Crisis" [1]. Because of this "assignment", I had the opportunity to become expert in processes associated with TQM and QFD (Quality Function Deployment). I taught these as an Adjunct Professor in the Business School at San Jose State University and explained the process in my own book, "Beyond Business as Usual" [2]. In the context of TQM, quality is defined in terms of response to customer needs (in this case, patient needs).
