There is no denying the past few years have been dark, turbulent times for editorial photographers. Emaciated budgets, droughts of opportunity and a deluge of non-professional competition have left the industry in crisis. Against all expectation however, a small frisson of positivity is starting to break through the clouds, like that first glimmer of sunshine after days of pouring rain. Helane Steinmuller investigates.
