Disturbances of memory following subarachnoid hemorrhage - A psychometric study [Ged?chtnisst?rungen nach subarachnoidalblutung - Eine psychometrische studie]
Subarachnoid hemorrhages (SAH) being sudden events affecting the brain in a rather wide-spread manner are apt to induce anterograde amnesias, as has been proven by single-case studies. The aim of the present investigation was to collect quantitative data on their frequency and extent in a larger sample of patients. To this end we examined 30 women and 14 men with an initial severity on the Hunt & Hess (H & H) scale between I and V at a mean of one year post-onset using the revised German version of the Wechsler Memory Scale (WMS-R). The raw scores were transformed into indices and percentage scores and compared with age-adjusted normal values. All of the total and subtest means ranged within the lower normal range whose lower limit was only marginally exceeded by the one-fold standard deviation. The correlation between the H & H scale and the memory indices was significant but minor. There was no selective loss of specific memory components or attention. The study showed that in the long run memory disturbances in survivors of SAH are rather mild.
