Parishes File Suits Against E&P Firms on Environmental Claims

The politics of oil and natural gas production in Louisiana came to the surface again last week as two southeast parishes filed multiple lawsuits against E&P companies. The suits filed by Jefferson and Plaquemines parishes were filed in state district courts claiming the companies violated state law by failing to repair damage to the coastal plain their operations caused. While the suits were being filed, Louisiana and the other Gulf Coast states received the first money from fines collected over the Macondo disaster.
