CCS Projects In Alberta Advancing to Next Stage

Alberta's carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) ef-forts have take a couple of major steps forward this year as the province has signed agreements with the sponsors of three technologies to be tested in the province aimed at reducing greenhouse gases, primarily carbon dioxide, emitted into the Western Canadian air. The province is injecting almost C$1.2 billion (US$1.22 bil-lion) into the three projects that collectively aim to cut green-house emissions by almost 2.2 million tons per year. The Al-berta government is continuing to pursue letters of intent with other project proponents for the remaining funds available. The first project will be a 145-mile pipeline to collect CO2 emitted from a refinery and a petrochemical plant to be located northeast of the provincial capital of Edmonton, The pipeline, known as the Alberta Carbon Trunk Line, will distribute the CO2 to enhanced oil recovery (EOR) projects in East-Central Alberta's mature oil fields. It also will carry CO2 to sequestration projects in the region.
