US Department of Energy Clears Non-FTA Deals at Cove Point LNG

The Cove Point LNG export terminal in Calvert County, Maryland, has become the fourth US LNG export project to receive approval from the US Department of Energy (DOE) to export LNG to countries with which the US does not have a free trade agreement (FTA). FTA-only approval for Cove Point came in October 2011. The last non-FTA approval was for the Lake Charles terminal in Louisiana in early August allowing 2 billion cubic feet per day in exports (NGW Aug.12'13). DOE granted the first non-FTA authorization in May 2011 to Cheniere's Sabine Pass LNG Terminal in Cameron Parish, Louisiana, for up to 2.2 Bcf/d and the second authorization a year later for the Freeport LNG Terminal on Quintana Island, Texas, for up to 1.4 Bcf/d (NGWMay20'13).
