Japan Sees LNG Imports Surge in Heated Scramble to Replace Nukes

Japan's March 2011 earthquake and tsunami and the subsequent Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster shook up the country's energy mix, with imports of LNG rising sharply to replace nuclear power and imports of more costly crude oil slipping. Japan's 2011 crude-oil imports fell 2.7% to 3.6 million barrels a day, while its LNG imports rose 12.2% to about 10 billion cubic feet per day, the Ministry of Finance said last week.
