Efforts to Cap Blowout Abandonees-Containment of Oil Spill Now Focus

Thad Allen said Friday that a containment cap has been lowered by BP to the top of its damaged Macondo well, signaling a small victory in the more than 44-day effort to contain the spill. The cap, he said, was collecting oil and natural gas and a series of vents will be slowly closed throughout the day to increase the amount of hydrocarbons flowing to the Deepwater Enterprise on the surface.
