US Allies Seek US LNG to Help Shake Overdependence on Russia

Echoes of the Cold War were heard in a forum held by the US House Energy and Commerce Committee, Subcommittee on Energy and Power last week. The forum entitled The Geopolitical Implications and Mutual Benefits of US LNG Exports brought representatives from the Czech Republic, Hungary, Haiti, India, Lithuania, Singapore, South Korea, Japan, Thailand and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. The forum was not held to address the US Department of Energy's slowly-moving queue of applications to export LNG to countries without a Free Trade Agreement with the US. Rather, the forum brought in representatives from countries likely to benefit from an end-around of that process — the Expedited LNG for AmericanAllies Act (H.R. 580), introduced in May by US Rep.Mike Turner (R-Ohio).
