US Geothermal Capacity Set to Rise 77% by 2020

In the world of alternative power, geothermal is pretty much overshadowed by its more publicized cousins — wind and solar. Geothermal's combined US installed capacity of 3,386 MW makes up 0.03% of the nation's power generation and accounted for about 1% of new renewable energy projects brought online in 2012. It's also fairly regional, with installed capacity in Hawaii and Alaska, and six western states — California, Nevada, Utah, Idaho, Oregon and Wyoming. A project also is under study in Texas, but it has not gone beyond the planning stage.
