摘要

The process of hydraulic fracturing used in shale gas extraction is very unlikely to cause earthquakes noticeable to humans, a recent report has concluded. Yet the report cautions that underground injection of wastewater, a common method of getting rid of unneeded water after the fracking process, does pose a high risk of inducing seismic activity. The report, sponsored by the US Department of Energy, was released Friday by the National Research Council (NRC). The council is affiliated with the National Academies of Science.
