Until it saw a modest rise last week, the number of rigs drilling for natural gas in the US had steadily declined in each of previous six weeks, data from Baker Hughes shows, as producers increasingly focus on plays rich in oil, natural gas liquids and condensate. The gas-directed rig count has slid by 57 rigs to 906 in the last seven weeks while the oil-directed rig count has been on a tear, rising 30% in the last six months to 789 rigs — its highest level in 23 years.
