EIA Admits 914 Production Report Seriously Overstated Gas Output

The Energy Information Administration's 914 monthly production data, a monthly survey of natural gas production, has a serious problem. The math just doesn't add up. Questions have swirled for years about the accuracy of the data, which finally culminated in last week's admission by the Department of Energy that it has been overstating US natural gas output, in some cases significantly. However, changes to the 914 report methodology should bring future data closer to reality, it said.
