Index: Texas E&P Industry Still In Very Early Stages of Recovery

The besieged Lone Star State energy industry got some good news last week as the Texas Petro Index (TPI) rose for a second month following 14 months of steady declines. The February TPI — which is a gauge of the energy industry's health based on a variety of indicators such as employment and drilling permits — rose to 191.6. The index went from 188.2 in December to 189.1 in January. The February TPI still remains 27.5% below the 264.4 reached a little over a year ago, said Karr Ingham, the petroleum economist who created the TPI for the Texas Alliance of Energy Producers. The TPI peaked at a revised 286 in September and October of 2008.
