Two San Francisco Gas Plants On Line Adding 900 MW to Power Grid

Calpine has started commercial operations at its Russell City Energy Center and Los Esteros Critical Energy Facility, both located in the San Francisco Bay area. Together, the two plants can generate more than 900 megawatts of power. The company said the fuel-efficient, combined-cycle natural gas-fired power plants are capable of meeting the electric needs of about 750,000 households. The output of both plants will be delivered to Pacific Gas and Electric, which will supply the plant with natural gas fuel, under 10-year contracts. The 619-MW Russell City Energy Center, located in Hay-ward, California, uses some of the most advanced emissions control technology available and its zero-liquid discharge design will conserve water by using reclaimed wastewater from the city of Hayward's Water Pollution Control Facility, which keeps up to four million gallons of wastewater from being discharged into San Francisco Bay each day.
