DOE to Spend S16M to Help Reduce High Cost of Wave and Tidal Power

The US Department of Energy (DOE) will spend $16 million to fund 17 projects aimed at developing wave and tidal power. In 2012, the DOE said that wave and tidal power could potentially produce up to 15% of US electricity by 2030. The DOE added that the best places for such development are the West Coast, Alaska and Hawaii. However, tidal and wave power are among the most expensive forms of power. According to NGW sister publication EI new Energy data, the levelized cost for tidal and wave power is about $280 per megawatt hour while only $47.40/ MWh for natural gas.
