Shell Oil Files for Permits to Drill At Chukchi Site Readied in 2012

Shell Oil made it official last week — it is going back to the Arctic, hopefully by the summer 2014 drilling season. The company has scaled back its previous plans and instead of drilling in the Beaufort and Chukchi seas, will only drill in what it calls its more lucrative leases in the Chukchi. Shell filed a broad-stroke drilling permit with the federal Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) that calls for the use of the drillship Noble Discoverer for several wells in the Chukchi Sea.
