EPA Proposes First-Ever Federal Rules Targeting Hydro-Fracturing

The US Environmental Protection Agency announced an unprecedented set of regulations governing hydraulic fracturing last week with a new requirement for reductions in volatile organic compounds emitted when fracturing is used to complete gas wells. Under the proposed rule, the EPA would require a 95% cut in the release of such compounds during fracturing. Cuts would also be required to emissions released from storage tanks, compressors and equipment used in natural gas processing plants.
