Well Containment Groups Proving Key to Getting Deepwater Permits

After nearly a year of regulatory delays following the BP oil-spill disaster, operators have finally broken the offshore permitting gridlock in the US Gulf of Mexico by employing the services of two oil-well containment companies and, in turn, securing federal approval to drill new wells. Five companies have obtained permits to drill individual wells in deepwater by stating their involvement in the Helix Well Containment Company or the Marine Well Containment Company (MWCC), or both, which have each developed rapid-response systems that are designed to prevent a possible oil spill from getting out of control.
