Gas Becoming 'Economic Engine' For Major US Coal Producer Consol

US coal giant Consol Energy lifted the curtain last week on a $1 billion capital budget for 2010 with $400 million going to its majority-owned CNX Gas division to fund coalbed methane and shale gas projects. While the company has signaled that coal will continue to be a major part of its planning, natural gas is becoming its key economic engine as it continues to widen its footprint in unconventional gas plays.
