USGS Finds Wolfcamp Shale Holds Up to 16 Tcf of Recoverable Gas

The US Geological Survey has issued a bullish report on oil and natural gas reserves in the Midland Basin's Wolfcamp Shale that could have big implications for US supply. According to the USGS, the formation holds 20 billion barrels of technically recoverable oil—roughly three times as much as the Bakken Shale inNorth Dakota—as well as 16 trillion cubic feet of gas and 1.6 billion barrels of natural gas liquids. "Even in areas that have produced billions of barrels of oil, there is still the potential to find billions more," said Walter Guidroz, program coordinator for the agency's energy resource program. He said the last time the USGS studied the Wolfcamp was in 2007.
