The Indiana Harbor Belt Railroad (IHB) is taking the concept of using natural gas a transportation fuel for locomotives out of the discussion phase and putting it into practice — in a big way. IHB has kicked off a project to convert switcher locomotives to run on compressed natural gas (CNG). The plan calls for 21 SW1500 units to be converted to running on Caterpillar C18 engines, two per locomotive, capable of operating on CNG.
