Canada has finally announced plans to change the way the country's coal-fired electricity sector is governed with the intention of moving more heavily toward alternative sources of energy, including natural gas, as a means of reducing the country's carbon footprint.But now the federal government says it plans to also change the regulations governing emissions from new natural gas-fired power plants that will be built to phase out traditional oil-fired plants that have reached the end of their life cycle.In an interview with the Globe and Mail last week, Canadian Environment Minister Peter Kent said the country's electricity sector should expect to face new emissions standards for gas plants that will be built to replace older coal-fired plants that will be mothballed after 2015.
