With the stroke of a pen, a lawsuit pitting three South Louisiana parishes against scores of oil and natural gas companies over claims of decades of damage to coastal flood plains went from mildly complicated to insanely complicated. The move puts a Republican attorney general on the same side with a Democratic governor in a state that is drowning in red ink. And like anything dealing with Louisiana, the energy industry, politics and money — it is anything but simple. The move by Gov. John Bel Edwards, and Attorney General Jeff Landry, makes the state a major player in the legal dispute.
