China has started sending Central Asian gas through a new branch of its second West-East gas pipeline to ease shortages in the southwest of the country, which is ironically known as China's most resource-rich region (NGW Dec.12'11). The 1.5 billion cubic foot per day Zhongwei-Guiyang line, operated by state-controlled PetroChina, was commissioned in late July to supply the Sichuan province with gas imports mainly sourced from Turkmenistan.
