An issue that's sure to emerge at the climate talks now under way in Paris is how key a role an expanded nuclear energy sector will play in combating global warming. On the face of it, nukes are a slam dunk, producing huge amounts of carbon-free power. But for a number of reasons, 'nuclear's prospects as a significant climate change mitigator are feeble to nonexistent,' said M.V. Ranama, a Princeton University physicist who works at the Nuclear Futures Laboratory and the Program on Science and Global Security.
