It can't be easy turning down a billion dollars, particularly when it works out to C$320,000 (US$267,000) for each member of a First Nations aboriginal band whose ancestral lands are near the port of Prince Rupert on British Columbia's rugged northern coast. But that is precisely what the 3,600-member strong Lax Kw'alaams band did in three separate meetings earlier this month — one at their community, one in Prince Rupert and another in Vancouver, which some 1,000 band members call home. All three votes were in favor of turning down the offer.
