EIA Analysis of CO2 Emissions for 2011 Show Steady Progress in US

The US emitted an estimated 5,383 million metric tons (MMT) of energy-related carbon dioxide emissions in 2011, a 3.4% drop from 2010, but an overall increase of 6.7% since 1990. According to a US Energy Information Administration study, natural gas was responsible for 1,307 MMT, or 24.3% of all energy-related CO2 emissions, behind coal at 1,855 MMT (34.5%) and petroleum at 2,221 MMT (41.3%).
