Hydropower Could Stymie Gas Inroads in Ontario

Ontario, Canada's most populous and industrialized povince, derives more than half of its power requirements from nuclear power plants, the majority of which are slated to be taken offline in the next few years for costly refurbish-ments - thus providing a window of opportunity for gas producers to step in and fill the void. Since booming sup-pies of US shale gas in nearby plays such as the Marcellus are located virtually on Ontario's border - and have been widely seen as a low-cost alternative to nuclear power -US gas producers saw the move as a perfect chance to greatly boost their market share in the province.
