An estimated 7.7 million metric tons of methane escapes into the atmosphere every year due to oil and gas industry activity — 29% of all US industrial methane pollution, according to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). But the environmental damage that causes isn't the only problem. It also means $1.75 billion a year is possibly being siphoned off the industry's bottom line.
