When Bureau of Ocean Energy Management Director Abigail Hopper announced last week that the BOEM's Western Gulf of Mexico Lease Sale in August would be broadcast live on the internet, it was apparent that the agency is entering the 21 st century in more ways than one. Sure, live-streaming the event makes perfect sense in this tech savvy age, but the last time the government moved this quickly to change the way it does things was perhaps when the US Federal Energy Regulatory Commission hastily closed its meeting to the physical public in the face of a large and very untidy environmental protest (NGW May23 '16). The commission was bluntly up front about it; the BOEM is being more coy.
