Evaluation of the nematicidal activity of Haplophyllum tuberculatum on Meloidogyne javanica

Several studies have shown the medicinal, fungicidal and nematicidal properties of the plant Haplophyllum tuberculatum. In this work, we examined the secreting structures in the plant and investigated the effect of different concentrations of aqueous, methanolic, ethanolic, chloroformic and hexanolic extracts of H. tuberculatum on hatching and mortality of eggs and motility and mortality of second stage juveniles of Meloidogyne javanica. The aqueous extract at 5 and 10% reduced egg hatching and juvenile motility and increased egg and juvenile mortality. At these concentrations, juvenile immobility reached 100% after 48 hours of exposure. The ethanolic and methanolic extracts showed the same effect as the aqueous extract, thus suggesting the nematicidal compound to be polar.
