Rapid, reliable and economically affordable methods for the identification of plant parasitic nematode species and races are very useful for regulatory purposes and for the adoption of appropriate integrated pest management strategies. The electrophoretic technique based on the comparison of the electrophoresis profiles of superoxide dismutase, esterase and malate dehydrogenase provides reliable identification of nematode plant pests and especially root-knot nematode species (Meloidogyne spp.). A rapid application of this technique has been developed using the automated electrophoresis equipment Phastsystem, which permits electrophoretic runs to be carried out in a short time and reproduce accurately isoenzymatic patterns at low cost..
